New Year's Eve Bird

The morning of New Year's Eve, I was feeding Elizabeth, and I heard a scratching noise coming from inside the wall. At first, I thought it was from the air vent or maybe our neighbors being weird, but then I realized it was coming from the wall next to the dryer. Later that day, Michael heard the same noise. He decided that it was coming from inside the dryer vent. He pulled out the dryer and unhooked the dryer vent from the dryer.

Inside the dryer vent was a little bird! Michael was able to coax it into a bowl, and I put an aluminum cover with fork holes over it. Lizzy was very fascinated by the bird. Whenever it would move in the bowl, she would stare very intently at it.

After the bird was safe in the bowl, I called the non-emergency police number, and told them about the bird. They said it was a matter for the wildlife people, and that they probably wouldn't answer their phone until Monday. We were advised to take the bird outside and see if it would fly away.

So, we put the little fluffy bird out on our porch, and watched it scramble around for a while. Then it flapped it wings in a frenzy and gave up. The poor thing froze to death. Michael and I think that it found our vent while I was drying some clothes and loved the heat. It probably camped there for a bit, and then fell down the hole and into our dryer vent.

The strangest things happen when you have your own place. It was very cute watching Lizzy discover the bird.
